Holme
Salaspils (Holme) is one of the oldest inhabited places in Latvia. It was first mentioned in written sources in 1186 in the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia, with a note that in 1186 a castle was built on a small island in the Daugava River called Holme (known as Mārtiņsala since the 17th century), which is now submerged. The castle and church on Mārtiņsala form the basis for the Latvian and German names of Salaspils – Kirchholm.
